An architectural decoration contractor in the United Arab Emirates ordered 304 No.4 4228 stainless steel sheet in 0.8 × 1500 × 3000mm from Sheye Metal. The requirement included Novacel 4228 laser film at a nominal thickness of 100 microns, with the film finishing flush with the sheet edges.

Sheye planned the grinding, film application and edge trimming around that requirement. The starting material was a 1535mm-wide TISCO coil with untrimmed edges. After oil polishing the full coil width to No.4, Sheye applied 1520mm-wide film during the cut-to-length process and trimmed the film and metal together to the required 1500mm sheet width.

PROTECTIVE FILM1520mm

FINISHED SHEET1500mm

Trim film and metal together, then cut to 3000mm length.

The oil-grinding stage included the material that would later become edge trim. The polished coil then moved to the cut-to-length line, where the wider film covered the intended finished-sheet width and extended into the trimming allowance. Cutting through the film and metal at the same edge created the requested alignment.

The 1520mm film is 20mm wider than the 1500mm finished sheet. That extra width provides room to remove surplus film with the edge trim. The film must still be positioned and tracked correctly during processing; its nominal width alone does not establish the finished edge quality.

Why use 1520mm film on a 1500mm sheet?

Applying film at exactly the finished sheet width requires the film edges to follow the intended metal edges closely. A lateral shift can leave an exposed strip on one side and an overhang on the other. For this order, Sheye used wider film and removed the excess during trimming, so the finished film edge followed the metal cut.

This approach supports the customer’s incoming inspection and subsequent handling. The film covers the polished face up to the trimmed edges, and loose film does not project beyond those edges. The stacked-sheet photographs show the protected sheets after they left the processing line.

There is a scrap-value trade-off. Using 1500mm-wide film can keep the removed edge strips free of film, making them more valuable to a scrap buyer. Sheye accepted film on the edge trim to meet the requested finished-edge condition.

A small scrap-value cost in the finished-sheet price

For this job, Sheye estimated that film-bearing 304 edge scrap would sell for about US$150 less per tonne of scrap than comparable clean edge scrap. That figure applies to the scrap stream; only a small proportion of the coil becomes side trim.

The width changes from 1535mm to 1500mm, removing 35mm in total. On a simple width-and-mass basis, that is approximately 35 ÷ 1500, or 2.33%, of the finished-sheet mass. Applying the stated US$150-per-tonne difference to that proportion gives approximately US$3.50 per finished tonne.

This calculation explains Sheye’s estimate of roughly US$3–4 per tonne for the scrap-value effect in this case. It excludes the extra film purchase cost, head-and-tail losses and other processing costs. Scrap prices and the amount of film on the trim vary by job. Here, Sheye chose the process that delivered the film alignment the customer had specified.

Novacel 4228 film for the next fabrication stage

The customer specified Novacel 4228 laser film. Novacel lists its 4228 REF processing film for both fiber and CO₂ laser cutting, with a nominal thickness of 100µm. This corresponds to the 0.10mm film thickness requested for the order. See Novacel’s 4228 product information.

The supplied photographs document film-covered sheets, stacking and inspection. Laser-cutting performance for the customer’s machine and settings is a separate application check. The processing record here concerns how the film was applied and trimmed to the finished sheet.

Source-coil identity and mill certificate

The original TISCO label identifies the SUS304 2B mother coil before oil polishing and trimming to the finished sheet width.

The TISCO label identifies the starting material as SUS304 cold rolled coil with a 2B mill finish, material number FA608C3410W00 and heat number A0603344. These identifiers also appear on the mill certificate. The 2B description refers to the source coil before Sheye’s No.4 oil polishing.

The label records a nominal 0.8 × 1535mm untrimmed coil and a reference thickness of 0.776mm. The certificate’s dimensions field reads 0.8 × 1500mm. Both original records are retained as issued; the 1535mm starting width in this processing case is supported by the coil label and Sheye’s production account. The finished sheet size was 0.8 × 1500 × 3000mm.

Issued on 31 August 2026, the certificate specifies JIS G 4305:2021, grade SUS304 and certificate type EN 10204 3.1. It records a source-coil weight of 25.471 tonnes; that is the mother-coil weight, not the weight of this UAE shipment.

The PMI photograph shows the instrument identifying the tested material as 304, with displayed readings of 18.23% chromium and 8.43% nickel. These are handheld readings at the tested location. They are presented separately from the mill’s heat analysis and do not replace the source-coil certificate.
