Sheye Metal supplied a customer in Peru with 304 stainless steel plate in No.1 finish, ordered at 12 × 1220 × 2440 mm. Before closing the export packages, the team checked thickness, width and length, carried out handheld PMI, and inspected the surface and plate markings.

For buyers sourcing 12mm 304 stainless steel plate in a 4 × 8 format, quantity can change the practical supply route. A few tonnes may be cut from wider plate already available in stock. A larger combined requirement can justify ordering a suitable mother coil and arranging levelling and cut-to-length processing.

The specification: 12mm, No.1, 1220 × 2440 mm

Peru order specification
Grade 304 stainless steel
Surface No.1, hot rolled, annealed and pickled
Nominal thickness 12 mm
Ordered width × length 1220 × 2440 mm
Destination market Peru
Visible heat marking A260721AC15

No.1 is a hot-rolled, annealed and pickled surface used where the appearance of a polished finish is unnecessary. Its dull surface is distinct from a cold-rolled 2B finish.

Buyers often use “4 × 8” when requesting this size family. Exactly 4 × 8 feet converts to 1219.2 × 2438.4 mm. The trade-rounded 1219 × 2438 mm size and the 1220 × 2440 mm metric size should therefore be stated separately on a purchase order. This Peru order uses 1220 × 2440 mm.

Wider stock or a mother coil?

Small orders: cut from wider plate

In Sheye Metal’s sourcing experience, small requirements, for example within about 5 tonnes, are often served by laser cutting 12 mm plate from 1500 mm wide stock. The starting plate must have enough length and cutting allowance for the finished dimensions. A 2438 mm long blank cannot produce a 2440 mm long plate.

This route can avoid waiting for a dedicated mill-coil order when suitable stock is available. The quotation needs to account for cutting, handling and the use of the remaining strip. Stock availability and the required edge condition affect the choice.

Combined demand: arrange coil-to-plate processing

When demand rises above roughly 10 tonnes, Sheye Metal may evaluate a mill-coil order, including sourcing options from mills such as TISCO. A mother coil around the four-foot width can weigh approximately 20 tonnes. These figures describe indicative purchasing scenarios; mill availability and the actual coil specification determine the order arrangement.

The source width must accommodate the finished width and any edge-trimming allowance. Levelling and cutting to length then produce the required plate size. At sufficient volume, this route can reduce material loss from trimming wider stock and spread processing costs across a larger run.

Combining small orders across markets

Sheye Metal supplies international buyers and demanding domestic end users. Orders from different customers can sometimes be combined into a mill purchase when their material specifications and timing are compatible. A buyer with a small requirement may then benefit from the economics of a larger sourcing programme.

Each customer’s dimensions and inspection requirements still guide the finished supply. For a 12mm 304 stainless steel plate supplier, comparing available plate with a coordinated coil purchase is part of preparing a practical quotation. The preferred route depends on the total compatible demand, processing arrangements and delivery schedule.

Thickness and overall dimensions

The three photographed micrometer checks show 11.851 mm, 11.880 mm and 11.874 mm on nominal 12 mm plate. These are readings at the photographed inspection points. Acceptance is assessed against the dimensional tolerances agreed for the order.

The tape-measure photographs record checks of the ordered 1220 mm width and 2440 mm length. Stating the exact metric size at enquiry stage helps avoid confusion between the two common four-by-eight ordering formats.

PMI and plate identification

The handheld PMI screen identifies the material as 304 and displays chromium at 18.07% and nickel at 8.85%. Handheld XRF provides an alloy-identification check; it does not directly measure carbon or replace a mill certificate and any specified mechanical or corrosion tests.

The plate marking reads “AISI 304 NO.1 12*1220*2440” and “HEAT NO.: A260721AC15”. Checking this identification alongside the order documents helps maintain traceability through processing and packing. Visual inspection also covers the accessible surface and edges before the packages are closed. See Sheye Metal’s quality control approach for related inspection work.
