Sheye Metal supplied 10mm stainless steel 316L plate in a 2000 × 4000 mm format for a South African customer. The order combined a two-metre-wide plate with two documentation requirements: an original mother-coil inspection certificate to EN 10204 Type 3.1 and a satisfactory intergranular corrosion (IGC) test result.

The plates were cut to length from TISCO hot-rolled coil. During processing, Sheye’s quality team checked the coil label, finished-plate marking, thickness, width, length and both diagonals. The photographs show those checks on the production line.

Sheye Metal is a first-tier TISCO agent and supplies 2000mm wide 316L stainless steel plate in 10mm thickness. Keeping suitable mother coils in stock allows the finished length to be set for the customer’s cutting plan. For this order, the required format was 2000 × 4000 mm.

From the TISCO coil label to the finished plate

The mother-coil label identifies S31603 / 1.4404 / 316L material with a 1D / No.1 finish. It carries heat number A0604056 and material number FA6100646, which also appear on the mill certificate. The finished-plate marking carries the same heat number alongside AISI 316L, No.1 and the 10 × 2000 × 4000 mm order size.

The mother-coil label identifies TISCO, material FA6100646, heat A0604056 and 1D/No.1 finish; its nominal mill-edge size is 10 × 2040 × C mm.
Plate marking reading AISI 316L No.1 10 by 2000 by 4000 and heat number A0604056.
Finished-plate marking records AISI 316L, No.1, the nominal 10 × 2000 × 4000 mm size and heat A0604056.

The label lists the mill-edge mother coil as 10 × 2040 × C. The certificate lists a 10 × 2000 mm specification, while the finished plates were ordered at 2000 mm wide and 4000 mm long. The mother-coil label and certificate record different widths. The finished plate width is checked separately after processing.

When ordering 316L 1D stainless steel plate in 10 × 2000 × 4000 mm, specify both the surface and the applicable product standard. This coil’s label and certificate use the combined designation “1D / No.1”.

Online dimensional and identification checks

The inspection begins with the coil identity and continues through the cut-to-length operation. Sheye checks the finished marking against the material record and visually inspects the plate surface during production. Thickness and cutting dimensions are checked against the order’s acceptance requirements before release.

Thickness at the measured points

The two micrometer photographs show local readings of 9.976 mm and 9.883 mm on the nominal 10 mm plate. Recording measurements at different points helps the quality team compare the material with the agreed thickness tolerance. These photographs document individual readings; the applicable tolerance and inspection record determine acceptance.

Width, length and squareness

Width and length checks follow the finished 2000 × 4000 mm format. The close-up photographs show the tape at approximately 200 cm across the plate and 400 cm along its length. The team also measures both diagonals to check the plate’s squareness, which affects fit-up when several panels are assembled.

For a repeat order, the buyer should specify thickness, width and length tolerances, together with squareness and flatness requirements. More about Sheye’s inspection workflow is available on the quality and export delivery page.

EN 10204 3.1 certificate and the IGC result

The TISCO mother-coil certificate is designated EN 10204 3.1 and records the material as S31603 / 1.4404 / 316L in the solution-treated and pickled condition. Its intergranular corrosion entry states GB/T 4334 E: OK. The certificate also lists the relevant chemical composition and mechanical test results for the identified coil.

A Type 3.1 certificate records specific inspection results and is validated by the manufacturer’s authorised inspection representative, independent of the manufacturing department. The original coil certificate provides material evidence that remains traceable through the heat and material numbers; the finished-plate measurements are checked separately. The IGC result applies to the test method recorded on this certificate. It does not establish resistance to every process fluid or operating condition. When another IGC method, edition or acceptance criterion is required, it should be agreed when the material is ordered.

Why the South African customer chose a 2000mm wide plate

The customer purchased the material for environmental and flue gas treatment equipment, including flue gas desulphurisation tower walls, wastewater tanks and gas scrubbers. For large fabricated vessels, the 2000 mm width can reduce the number of panels and joining seams when the design and cutting layout allow it. Fewer joints can reduce welding, finishing and inspection work, as well as the number of weld areas that need corrosion control.

316L contains molybdenum, which improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared with 304L in many chloride-containing environments. Its low carbon content also helps limit sensitisation associated with welding. These properties are useful in process equipment, but material selection still depends on temperature, chemical concentration, chloride content, deposits and the fabrication details. Strong acids, aggressive chlorides or alternating process conditions may require a more resistant alloy. Outokumpu’s guidance on corrosion resistance.

A wider plate can simplify the fabrication layout; weld procedures, post-weld surface treatment and service conditions still determine how the finished equipment performs.
