Compare them when the fabrication involves substantial sections, repeated welding cycles or service sensitive to intergranular corrosion. 304L reduces sensitization risk, while 304 remains a weldable material whose suitability depends on the complete process and service conditions. The choice should include the design-strength requirements and any post-fabrication heat treatment. A fixed thickness rule cannot replace that review, and purchasing 304L does not by itself establish permission to substitute a grade specified on an equipment drawing.

Specify dimensions and tolerances, delivery condition, the applicable plate standard and edition, required inspection documents and the fabrication route. If the design uses a particular grade designation or standard, retain it explicitly instead of replacing it with a general equivalence list. Pressure or elevated-temperature equipment also needs the relevant design requirements. Where more than one grade or standard is requested, require the mill certificate to identify the certified requirements rather than assuming all material marked 304 has that status.
